Thép hợp kim cao (loại có ít nhất một nguyên tố vượt quá 5%) thì trước ký hiệu có chữ Z (AFNOR), X (DIN) và lượng nguyên tố hợp kim đều biểu thị đúng theo phần trăm. Ví dụ, Z20C13 (AFNOR), X20 Cr13 (DIN) là mác thép không gỉ có khoảng 0,20% C và khoảng 13%Cr.
AFNOR ký hiệu gang xám bằng FGLxxx, gang cầu bằng FGSxxx-xx và gang dẻo MBxxx-xx, trong đó nhóm ba con số đầu chỉ giới hạn bền kéo theo Mpa, nhóm hai con số sau chỉ độ giãn dài (%).
DIN ký hiệu gang xám bằng GGxx, gang cấu bằng GGGxx và gang dẻo lõi đen GTSxx-xx, gang dẻo lõi trắng GTWxx-xx với các số biểu thị giới hạn bền theo Kg/mm2 và độ giãn dài (%).
e. Anh
Với tiêu chuẩn BS (British Standard) ký hiệu thép và gang như sau: Thép được ký hiệu bằng hệ thống chữ và số:
- Ba con số đầu chỉ loại thép;
- Một chữ: A, M, H ( trong đó H chỉ thép đảm bảo độ thấm tôi).
- Hai con số sau cùng chỉ phần vạn cacbon.
Gang xám ký hiệu bằng xxx, gang cầu bằng xxx/xx, gang dẻo lõi đen bằng Bxx-xx, gang dẻo lõi trắng bằng Wxx-xx, gang dẻo peclit bằng Pxx-xx, trong đó nhóm số thứ nhất chỉ giưới hạn bền kéo theo Mpa hay Kg/mm2 tùy theo có ba hay hai con số, nhóm thứ hai chỉ độ giãn dài theo %.
Thép không gỉ được ký hiệu bằng xxxSxx, trong đó xx lấy theo AISI.
